A sewer ejector pump is a specialized type of pump designed to move wastewater from a lower elevation to a higher one, where it can then flow into the main sewer or septic system. Unlike a sump pump, which handles clear water from flooding or drainage, an ejector pump is built to handle solids and liquids from toilets, sinks, and showers. It typically sits in a sealed basin or pit below the level of the fixtures it serves. When the wastewater in the basin reaches a certain level, a float switch activates the pump, which then “ejects” the waste through a discharge pipe to the main sewer line. This system is crucial for any basement or lower-level plumbing to prevent sewage backups and ensure proper waste removal.
Even the most robust systems can encounter issues. For homeowners, recognizing the signs of a struggling sewer ejector pump can save you from costly emergencies. Common problems include the pump running continuously, not turning on at all, making unusual noises, or experiencing frequent clogs. If your pump is running constantly, it could indicate a stuck float switch or a check valve issue. If it fails to activate, the float switch might be jammed, or there could be an electrical problem. Unusual grinding or humming noises often point to motor issues or debris caught in the impeller.
Frequent clogs typically result from non-flushable items entering the system. While some minor issues might be temporarily addressed with basic troubleshooting, such as checking for power or freeing a stuck float, most problems require professional attention due to the nature of the wastewater and the complexity of the unit.
The cost of sewer ejector pump services can vary widely depending on the specific service required. A new installation, for instance, will naturally be more expensive than a simple repair, as it involves excavation, plumbing, and electrical work. Factors influencing cost include the pump's horsepower, the complexity of the installation site, whether new piping is needed, and labor rates. Repairs might involve replacing a float switch, clearing a clog, or replacing the entire pump unit. Sullivan Plumbing believes in transparent pricing and provides detailed estimates before any work begins, ensuring you understand all costs involved.
Regular preventative maintenance is key to extending the life of your sewer ejector pump and avoiding unexpected breakdowns. For residents, we recommend annual inspections by a qualified plumbing service. During these checks, our team will inspect the pump's components, test the float switch, clear any minor obstructions, and ensure the check valve is functioning correctly. We'll also look for signs of wear and tear, address potential electrical issues, and confirm the basin is clean. This proactive approach can help identify small problems before they escalate into major, expensive repairs or, worse, a sewage backup.

We had a leak we could hear but couldn't see, and Sullivan Plumbing came to the rescue. Megan booked us for a service call the very next day, and Chris and Casey were outstanding. They were professional, friendly, and quickly identified and repaired the broken pipe—all within an hour. The pricing was fair and reasonable, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. I highly recommend the incredible team at Sullivan Plumbing without hesitation. Five stars!Posted on Google![]()

Got the hose bib replaced easily, even crawling in crawl space. Smiles and a helpful attitude made the work good from our side, too.Posted on Google![]()

I chose Sullivan because of our years with you. I'd disassembled our washer/dryer and a laundry sink for a new floor installation and felt professionals should do the reinstall of everything so it was done properly and that's what happened. Nick and Johnny came this afternoon and got everything back and running smoothly. I was very impressed at how thorough they were in evaluating what needed to be done and doing it. Thanks to them and your company.Posted on Google![]()

I just took advantage of Sullivan's "protection plan", which includes an annual water heater tank flush and while-home plumbing inspection along with other perks like waived call-out fees and priority service when they're busy -it's affordable peace of mind. This is the second time I've done business with Sullivan, and the two plumbers and one office staff that I've met have all been great. Nick's inspection was thorough and diligent, and identified a major problem - excessive water pressure - that would otherwise have gone unnoticed until it caused an unpredictable failure. I'm happy with Sullivan and plan to stick with them.Posted on Google![]()

Review below from 3 years ago! My dad mentioned that this seems to happen every 3 years and I’m impressed that his comment was true. Amy answered the phone and was able to schedule us right away, there was a cancellation. Chris showed up with Megan (the other scheduler for the company) as his ride-with for the day. They were fun! Amazing job not only with using an Auger to clear the pipe but fixing our YouTube DIY mess. Also I was very impressed with Chris doing extra work by scrubbing/cleaning up the area under the kitchen sink. I had not realized that I called them last time but sure glad I did! Kitchen sink clog. Amy put us in a cancellation list and, with Lori, kept me updated. They got us scheduled before other companies could. Scott was awesome. Gave us a senior discount, we didn't have to ask if one was available. Overall great experience, it didn't feel like we were being price gouged.Posted on Google![]()

I found a water bubble on my ceiling at 6pm on a Sunday (of a holiday weekend, at that!), and they had someone dispatched to me within an hour! Nick was great, fixed the leak immediately (I was able to find it before he got here), got it cleaned up, and worked with me to get the best case scenario of having functional plumbing but not having to do more work than necessary at emergency/weekend prices, saving me quite a chunk of change.Posted on Google![]()

Great experience! Two technicians came out right away, and they were both very professional and friendly. They pinpointed our issue quickly and got it resolved. We’ll definitely call Sullivan again in the future!
